10th Anniversary of National IT Project and National Website

This month, we celebrate the founding of National It Project and National Website. Following is the text extracted and edited from the book "A Century of Service to Mankind", a brief history of the National website.

With the emergence of the World Wide Web in Malaysia
in the 1990s, numerous attempts were made to start
a national website. In September 2002, a Johor state
officer and an ex-SJAM member got to know each other
through the internet and came up with the idea of a SJAM
website. They started collecting materials and designed
a draft layout for the website. A month later, Encik Hoo
We Tak and Encik Jimmy Low Ghim Meng presented
their ideas to Encik Lai See Ming, Hon. Secretary-General.
In November 2002, the trio got together at the latter’s
residence in Seremban to fine tune the website layout
and finalise its contents. On 14 December 2002, a soft
launch of the national website was performed by SJAM
Commander-in-Chief Dato’ Dr. Low Bin Tick, during
the inaugural National IT Conference at the National
Headquarters in Jalan Shelley, Kuala Lumpur.

IT Conference held at NHQ in 2002

Encik Lai See Ming was appointed National IT Committee
Chairman with Encik Jimmy Low Ghim Meng and
Encik Hoo We Tak as its members. SJAM moved forward
and embraced IT as part of the organisation’s vision
to serve mankind. During the National IT Conference,
papers were presented to standardise IT policies which
were eventually adopted by SJAM. Among the papers
presented were policies to standardise the use of the
official name, emblems and domain naming conventions.
The conference also served as an avenue to discuss plans
to standardise the website at various levels and other
IT projects. More than thirty officers from Kedah, Perak,
Penang, Wilayah Persekutuan, Selangor, Melaka, Pahang
and Terengganu attended the National IT Conference.

St. John Ambulance of Malaysia website (http://www.
sjam.org.my) was officially launched on 5 July 2003 by
YB Datuk Ong Tee Keat, Deputy Minister of Youth
and Sports during the 95th Anniversary National
Conference in Genting Highlands. During the same
year, “Watercooler” forum was officially setup within
the website which received an overwhelming response
from members and officers. Exabytes Sdn. Bhd. donated
13 web hosting packages to SJAM in 2003.

In 2007, the national website layout was updated when
the committee decided to use a content management
system to aid the management of the website.
Encik Kok Chee Wai took over the baton as the webmaster
of the national website. To date, Selangor, Pulau Pinang,
Melaka, Johor, Sabah and Perak have their own websites
to publicise their activities and events. In 2011, We Tak took over the responsibility in maintaining the website. SJAM joined facebook in 2011 and the website is linked to a facebook page in 2011.
